La Dimora is a stunningly unique and luxurious home located inside the ancient town of Civita di Bagnoregio, in central Italy, the Lazio region near the borders with neighboring Tuscany and Umbria. It is an idyllic place of beauty and charm and an oasis of peace away from the modern world. The village's homes are made of the same volcanic tufa rock that the town is built on, making them feel as a natural organic extension of the cliffs. The streets are abloom with hydrangeas, geraniums and jasmine. Rick Steves calls Civita "the most beautiful village in Italy".
Civita di Bagnoregio is a unique destination: a pristine Medieval village perched majestically on a hilltop set in a vaste valley carved into volcanic rock by two rivers. Its only connection to the modern world is a footbridge by which you will travel the last half mile of your voyage into another world, virtually untouched by modern life. To arrive here is to discover a place that until then only existed in dreams: the ultimate Italian hill town preserved by a rich and splendid history and by the love of its current inhabitants. Entering the old town is like stepping back in time 600 years to rediscover the beauty and peace of a different way of life.
The town was founded by the Etruscans, conquered by the Romans and shaped by the architecture of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. It survives and thrives in the heart of the Alta Tuscia, the beautiful and historically rich land of the Etruscans, and offers a gateway not only to the past but to many beautiful villages and towns in southern Tuscany, western Umbria, and northern Lazio. If you are travelling by car, Civita di Bagnoregio is 15 minutes south of the Orvieto exit on the A1 highway connecting Rome to Florence, 15 minutes east of the ancient Via Cassia connecting Rome to Siena. The closest train station is Orvieto which is only 15 minutes away and about an hour's ride from Rome. The closest airport is in Perugia but Rome's Fiumicino airport is the most convenient for international travel (1.5 hours away).
THE HOUSE & GARDEN
La Dimora is a portion of a 14th century palazzo that sits on an underground system of caves, Etruscan tombs and a Roman water cistern. The floor tiles, the stone fireplace, the rustic ceiling beams are still the original ones and have been carefully restored. Through the caves you access the beautiful formal Italian garden which hangs between 2 stone cliffs with amazing views of the surrounding valley.
From the formal Italian garden you can access 2 stone caves that have been converted into an amazing and unique pool with hot tub as well as a garden kitchen. Below these an underground art gallery has been created in a medieval wine storage grotto. These spaces have all been carved into the tufa rock of the cliff centuries ago and today their purpose has been reinvented to provide guests with unique amenities that enhance the magical quality of the house.
An old Roman water cistern, still plastered in its original hydraulic plaster, has been transformed into a truly unique wine cellar of highly selected local wines for guests of the home. It is accessed through a medieval set of caves and tunnels dug fully into the rock which also connect the house to the garden. It is a magical experience to walk through and being able to enjoy these unusual underground spaces.
Located on the 2nd floor of the house, the living room and main kitchen constitute the original core of the living quarters with a remarkable basalt stone fireplace, terracotta floors and wooden beams, all dating from the 14th century and carefully restored. The introduction of the modern minimalist kitchen and furnishings creates a unique synergy that makes the space at once comfortable, poetic, yet respectful of its "original soul".
SUITE 1: A bedroom and study are located on the ground floor where the old "bottega" of the house used to be. The 2 rooms form one large suite with a king size bed, a built in sofa doubling as a twin bed, a study area for reading and relaxing, an extra twin bed and a private bathroom with shower. The partially exposed tufa rock adorning the wall and the presence of the many arched doors gives this room a unique cozy feel.
SUITE 2: Located on the top floor of the home, this suite boasts stunning and expansive views of the valley surrounding Civita and features an extra wide queen size bed, exposed ceiling beams, en-suite bathroom with shower, ceiling fan and plenty of storage space. The views of the valley outside the window in the morning are delightful and the modern interior touches combined with the carefully restored ancient doors and ceilings create a vibrant and beautiful environment.
SUITE 3: Also located on the top floor is the third bedroom with its intimate views of the town of Civita. This suite features an extra wide queen size bed, exposed ceiling beams, en-suite bath with shower, ceiling fan and plenty of storage space. The room is bright and breezy creating an atmosphere of serenity. The golden color of the town outside the windows glows beautifully throughout the day and gives the room a romantic and intimate feel.

While Civita di Bagnoregio is a wonderfully isolated, an almost otherworldly spot, an oasis of tranquility and romance, there are several restaurants and 2 cafes in town. You can find all the other amenities required for a pleasant stay in its sister city of Bagnoregio - the town on the other side of the footbridge and less than a mile away. This includes banks, a gas station, a weekly market, a supermarket, bakeries, and all the other wonderful shops a typical small Italian town has to offer. While Civita is famous for its beauty and links to antiquity, Bagnoregio was made famous by Fellini who filmed the movie La Strada on its streets. So geologically, geographically, historically and culturally, Civita and its environs are located at the juncture of the heart and soul of Italy!!
