Panzanella: A Tuscan Summer Salad

Panzanella is a summer salad that will soon be making its appearance on all Tuscan tables, once tomatoes and cucumbers come into season. Many Tuscan dishes are based on peasant traditions and the famous salt-less Tuscan bread is at the base of many of these traditional dishes. Panzanella was a dish that was eaten out in the fields when the farmers took their breaks from their daily work. Medieval Tuscany

Medieval festivals are abound in Italy, especially during the summer months. Monteriggioni and San Gimignano host two of the most important ones and are definitely worth a visit if you are planning a trip out to this area in June or July. I would go as far as to suggest booking your vacation with those dates in mind so that you are sure to be here for one of the festivals because they are quite an incredible experience! These two towns are the perfect settings for such events because they actually haven't changed a great deal since medieval times. During the festivals they are transformed with soldiers battling, knights and damsels walking the streets and open-air taverns offering typical medieval fare. >>
