The Grape Festival of Impruneta

With the end of summer right around the corner and the first cool breezes of autumn blowing across the hills, Tuscany welcomes harvest season while numerous grape and wine festivals color towns and villages with lively celebrations. This is a great time to visit Tuscany, Italy's most prestigious wine country, for wine and food lovers. The Festa dell'Uva of the town of Impruneta (just a 25 minute drive south of Florence) is one of the longest running in Italy. This year it will be held on Sunday September 27th in Piazza Buondelmonti, the main square of the village. >>

Cacio & Pepe: A Quintessential Italian Dish

After reading the article When in Rome, Learn to Cook Italian, by Tara Grescoe on the NYTimes Travel section, I became inspired to cook up the simple and unassuming traditional Roman pasta dish of cacio e pepe. I have never ordered it at a restaurant, much less thought of making it myself at home...perhaps because I live in Tuscany and it is not a regular item on Tuscan menus. But after reading this article I realized that all these years, I've probably been missing out on one of those quintessentially Italian experiences, particularly Italian in its simplicity... and what I love most about Italy is its simplicity in all things (except politics!). Here is the most classic of classic dishes, consisting in basically only 3 ingredients. >>

Truffle Delights

It's that time of year again...Autumn in Tuscany when the landscape releases a brilliance of colors and the land is ripe with the fruits of a year's worth of love and labor. Harvest festivals abound in Tuscany from September through November, showcasing new wine, new olive oil drizzled over hot grilled bruschetta, specialties featuring chestnuts and porcini mushrooms... and the most treasured and aromatic protagonist of all: the truffle. This subterranean mushroom makes even the most seasoned foodies swoon. In Tuscany they grow plentifully in the countryside making October and November some of the best eating months here. >>

Visiting Tuscany in the Off-Season

Now that our months of Italian summer fun and sun and sand and endless gelatos are coming to a close, I'm starting to mentally prepare myself for the change in the upcoming months of cool and cold breezes, steamy afternoon cappuccinos, crackling fireplaces (often with a steak or sausage bristling away over a grill), and misty landscapes peppered with stunning red-orange-golden foliage. I was talking the other day to my friend Daniela who offers her delightful family villa in Chianti for holiday rentals during the year, and we were wondering why it is that the bulk of tourism in Tuscany necessarily has to be during the summer months. >>

Olive Oil, A Way Of Life

This article from The New York Times' Travel section delicately and exhaustively explores the poetic nuances behind the culture of olive oil. As the author notes, in Italy olive oil is not simply a condiment to use when having guests over...it is a profound way of life. Many people come to Italy to tour the wineries but the art of olive oil - from cultivation to harvesting to pressing to the table - is layered with just as many subtleties and overtones. A tour of an olive mill, especially during harvest time in October and November, is a must when visiting Tuscany. Tasting of various gradations of this liquid gold is great fun, a wonderful way of celebrating the harvest and can open you up to a whole new way of experiencing flavors! >>

Why Rent a Villa in Tuscany?

Renting a villa is often thought to be a luxury but in Italy, a private luxury holiday is a surprisingly viable holiday idea! This unique solution allows you to truly live like a local while letting you explore the beautiful, hidden corners of your surroundings at your own pace. A villa rental offers four major advantages over a hotel: space, privacy, flexibility and value. This is a special opportunity to spend quality time with friends and family, and a villa allows you to enjoy a truly home-from-home experience. >>
